BURAN
Famous for its lace and colorful houses, Burano is an island in the Northern Venetian Lagoon, 11 km northeast of Murano and Venice; the trip by regular boat takes about 45 minutes. It can also be easily reached from Treporti (10 minutes) and Punta Sabbioni (30 minutes), towns in the municipality of Cavallino-Treporti that overlook the lagoon.

All visitors to Burano are fascinated by its thousands of colors. It feels like paradise: children whizzing free on their bicycles, balconies colorful with the most beautiful flowers, fishermen hoisting freshly caught fish from their typical boats.
The colors of the houses, which today have become the island’s main feature, were once used to demarcate properties. However, there is a “legend” related to the colorful character of the island. It relates that it was the fishermen who used to paint their homes in order to recognize them from afar during long periods of absence due to fishing. Long and narrow in shape, it is characterized by the presence of several cultivated areas. Well known throughout the area are the “castraure di Mazzorbo,” that is, the first fruit of the artichoke plant, whose flavor, already bitter in itself, is enhanced by the saltiness with which the soil of this island is impregnated.

The island is easily reached from Burano in 5 minutes by ACTV ferries. Just over 10 residents live on Torcello, a small island that was one of the first in the lagoon to be inhabited since the 7th century. And then a few hotels and little else. Perhaps because of this, today Torcello is one of the favorite islands for tourists.
