CHIOGGIA
A plunge into the magic of the calli, among the picturesque San Domenico and Lombardo canals that make Chioggia a little Venice. The architectural heritage is made up of houses and bridges, unique and colorful forms at the center of a lagoon habitat in which natural aspects also coexist to be preserved and protected.
Corso del Popolo, an aristocratic and radiant square that Curzio Malaparte called a great café, is always teeming with people. Standing out here is the Clock Tower, a former lighthouse and watchtower, now a museum housing Chioggio’s history, at the top of which the astrological clock and belfry can be visited. The cathedral, named after Santa Maria Assunta in cielo, is located south of the square, between the Santa Maria or Porta Garibaldi gate, the ancient land entrance to the city, and the nearby church of S. Martino, which once housed a polyptych attributed to Paolo Veneziano, now on view in the nearby Diocesan Museum.
Two of Chioggia’s most important events are the Marciliana and the Fish Festival. The former takes place in June and is a medieval-style historical re-enactment of the famous war of Chioggia between Genoa and Venice with historical parades and competitions between the ancient “contrade.” In July, the Fish Festival attracts many tourists who can visit as many as four food stands and enjoy a variety of typical Chioggia menus.
Chioggio cuisine is renowned not only in Italy but also internationally. Typical local earth products such as radicchio, onion and pumpkin and fresh seafood (blue fish, shellfish) give rise to unique dishes for a mix of flavor and quality; some chefs who have tried their hand at preparing local dishes have won important titles worldwide. What can never be missing from the tables of local restaurants, however, is Chioggia bread, a fragrant and crispy ring-shaped loaf.
A curiosity links Chioggia to a unique demographic case in our country: the very high degree of homonymy between the two most common surnames, Boscolo and Tiozzo, obliged the Registry to make official in the registry the sayings, that is, nicknames used to distinguish branches of the same family. These sayings thus accompany the person concerned for all legal purposes on every official document, including driver’s license and identity card.
SUBMARINE
Beach tourism in Chioggia has developed considerably due to the presence of the lido in the hamlets of Sottomarina and Isolaverde. The beach can be reached via the Lungomare Adriatico at which there are renowned hotels and bathing establishments, which represent a significant economic lever for the entire city.
