Matera with its Sassi is a nativity scene in real size, a timeless city. In fact, the Sassi constitute the ancient core of the city of Matera, housing structures with streets and underground labyrinths dug directly into the tuff rock, and used since ancient times.
They are divided into two districts the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso. The Sasso Barisano, the largest, is characterized by the presence of stores, restaurants and hotels while the Sasso Caveoso is the oldest quarter that most preserves the appearance of the rock city.
To fully appreciate their uniqueness, they should be visited on foot, losing themselves in alleys, stairways and panoramic squares from which to enjoy the enchanting views that the Murgia of Matera will give you.

The fascinating site of the Sassi is protected by UNESCO as a National Heritage Site.
