Recently, on September 24, we all celebrated the world tourism day and I can’t help but detect some post-summer satisfaction in the industry. Yes, because there is an incredible eagerness to resume traveling and getting in touch with the world and human beings. Contact that these past two years has not been allowed to have. By now on this eagerness to get moving again, I won’t add more, it’s not my place; here I wanted to tell about a curious research I found online, conducted by Google and Kantar (the world leader in insights, consulting and data management).
Reading the data from this research showed that one of the main reasons for booking travel during this 2021 is to visit friends and family. Other reasons for people to book a trip include the desire to treat themselves to a gift, a “pampering,” unplug this blessed plug from technology and monitors, etc., and get away from the daily grind and especially from the walls of home.
With bookings, optimism and the desire to catch up from the beginning of the pandemic to the present also grows.
As of early 2021, the top 10 most searched tourist destinations in Europe on Google Maps were:
1 – Eiffel Tower (France)
2 – Basílica de la Sagrada Família (Spain)
3 – Musée du Louvre (France)
4 – Europa-Park (Germany)
5 – Colosseum (Italy)
6 – Plitvička jezera (Croatia)
7 – Amalfi Coast (Italy)
8 – Energylandia (Poland)
9 – Milan Cathedral (Italy)
10 – Camp Nou (Spain)
Turning instead to Italy alone, the ten most searched tourist destinations in Italy this year on Google Maps were:
1 – Colosseum
2 – Amalfi Coast
3 – Milan Cathedral
4 – Gardaland
5 – Trevi Fountain
6 – Tower of Pisa
7 – Pantheon
8 – Piazza Navona
9 – People’s Square
10 – Villa Borghese
Many companies in the industry have been brought down by this momentous health disaster; others have found digital, technology and insight a lifeline. Especially the latter have enabled them to understand the changes in travel demand.
There are useful examples of establishments that have saved themselves by using, for example, Hotel Insights, a free tool from Google helps the accommodation establishment get to know deeply the travelers searching for accommodations in the area in which it operates and interpret their needs to optimize online offerings and improve site usability.
